it all started with jon favreu's iron man in 2008, starring robert downey jr. as tony stark/iron man, terrence howard as rhodey rhodes, jeff bridges as obadiah stane/iron monger and gwyneth paltrow as pepper potts. next was louis lletterier's the incredible hulk in 2008 as well, starring edward norton as bruce banner/hulk, liv tyler as dr. betty ross, tim roth as emil blonsky/abomination, ty burrel as dr. leonard samson, tim blake nelson as dr. samuel sterns and william hurt as gen. thunderbolt ross. then onto jon farvreu's iron man 2 in 2010, starring robert downey jr. as tony stark/iron man, gwyneth paltrow as pepper potts, don cheadle as rhodey rhodes/war machine, scarlett johansson as natasha romanoff/black widow, mickey rourke as ivan vanko/whiplash, and samuel l. jackson as nick fury. now to kenneth branagh's thor in 2011, starring chris hemsworth as thor odinson, tom hiddleston as loki laufeyson, natalie portman as dr. jane foster, anthony hopkins as odin, and jamie alexander as lady sif. finally joe johnston's captain america: the first avenger also in 2011, starring chris evans as steve rogers/captain america, hugo weaving as jouhann smidt/red skull, sebastian stan as sgt. bucky barnes, and hayley atwell as agt. peggy carter. finally it will all cuminate in joss whedon's the avengers in 2012, starring robert downey jr. as tony stark/iron man, chris evans as steve rogers/captain america, chris hemsworth as thor odinson, scarlett johansson as natasha romanoff/black widow, samuel l. jackson as nick fury, clark cregg as agt. phil coulson, mark ruffalo as bruce banner/hulk, and jeremy renner as clint barton/hawkeye
